  • EV sales penetration dropped to 18.4% in Q1 2023 from 27.6% in Q4 2022
  • Tesla Model Y was the best-selling EV model across all major countries except Spain.
  • EV sales penetration is expected to exceed 25% again by the end of the year.

London, New Delhi,San Diego, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong, Beijing, Seoul – July 5, 2023

Europe’s passenger electric vehicle* (EV) sales increased by more than 13% YoY in Q1 2023, according to the latest research from Counterpoint’sEurope Passenger Electric Vehicle Model Sales Tracker. While overall passengercar salesin Europe are showing signs ofimprovement, they have not yet reached pre-COVID-19 levels. In terms ofoverall EV sales德国领导包,紧随其后的是英国, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Norway. Meanwhile, the share of EVs in total passenger vehicle sales was the highest in Norway and the Netherlands.

In Q1 2023,Battery EV(BEV) salesjumped 32% YoYwhile plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) sales declined 13% YoY. Consequently, the EV share of total passenger vehicle salesdeclinedduring the quarter from that a year ago.

Meanwhile, there has beennotable progressin the European market for Hybrid EVs (HEV) and mild-hybrid EVs (MHEVs). This indicates that Europe is making efforts to tap into the lower-end EV market while simultaneously developing battery ecosystems and fostering a circular economy. These initiatives are being undertaken before placing a stronger emphasis on pure EV sales.

Europe EV Sales Share by brand

Commenting on the market dynamics,Senior Analyst Soumen Mandalsaid, “In Q1 2023, mostEuropean EV saleswere captured by the top five automotive groups – Volkswagen Group, Tesla, Stellantis, Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai-Kia. They accounted for nearlytwo-thirdsof the market share. When it comes to pure electric vehicles (BEVs),Teslaholds the second position, slightly behindVolkswagen. In the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) market, Volkswagen takes the lead, followed byMercedes-BenzandBMW.”

Chinese EV manufacturersstruggled to increase their market share in Europe during the quarter. However,MG, BYD, NIO, ORAandAiwaysmanaged to improve their sales compared to the previous year. On the other hand,LYNK & CO,HongqiandXpengfaced challenges in the European market. Nevertheless, we expect Chinese automakers to be able to enhance their market share in the coming quarters by offering cost-effective vehicles with advanced features, as the EV market is expected to perform better.”

Thetop-selling EV modelduring Q1 2023 was theTesla Model Y, followed by theVolvo XC40,Tesla Model 3, Volkswagen ID.3, and Audi Q4 e-tron. These top five models account for nearly a quarter of the total shipments. The Tesla Model Ydominates市场在欧洲主要国家,恶魔trating Tesla’s strong brand presence in the region, except in Spain where it faces more competition.

European EV sales Q1 2023

Discussing the market outlook,Research Vice President Peter Richardsonsaid, “The penetration of EVs in total passenger vehicle sales in Europe experienced adeclinethis quarter, dropping to 18.4% from 27.6% in Q4 2022. This is a significant shift compared to the previous trend of continuous QoQ growth. Except France, all major countries experienced this decline during Q1 2023.”

“Several factors contributed to this decline, including theunstable economic conditionsand the removal of EV subsidies by Norway. Germany, the largest EV market in Europe, experienced a decline as thelooming recessionandcautious consumer spendinghurt the EV market. These circumstances impacted the overall adoption of EVs in the region. However, since April, the European region has shown signs of recovery. As a result, we expect the share of EVs to rebound andsurpass 25%again by the end of this year.”

Smartphone Market Rebounds in Netherlands, Denmark, Finland in Q4 2020; 5G Penetration Crosses 50% of Shipments

London, Boston, Toronto, New Delhi, Beijing, Taipei, Seoul – February 22, 2021

Smartphone shipments in the Netherlands, Denmark, and Finland showed positive QoQ growth in Q4 2020 largely thanks to strong demand for theApple iPhone 12series, even as some regions remained underpartial lockdown, according to Counterpoint Research’s latest analysis of the European smartphone market. Out of the three markets in focus, the Netherlands proved to be the most resilient with 19% QoQ growth, followed by Finland and Denmark with 14% and 10% QoQ growth, respectively.

5Gsmartphone penetration reached more than 50% of total smartphone shipments in all three countries, higher than the European average. While the iPhone 12 was the most popular 5G smartphone, Samsung’s S20 and Note 20 series also did well. In the mid-tier segment ($250-$400), OnePlus’s Nord emerged as the highest-selling 5G Android smartphone in Finland and Denmark.

Market Analysis:

Finland

Finland’s market showed a QoQ growth of 14% and had the biggest quarter of 2020 in terms of smartphone shipments. Samsung was the largest OEM in Finland in Q3 but, despite a strong performance, it was overtaken byApplein Q4. Apple and Samsung both had four models each in the top 10 models list. Although Apple enjoyed the top spot in Q4, the gap remains very close;Samsungcould reclaim the position after the launch of its S21 series.

OnePlusstrengthened its grip on the third position, thanks to the consistently strong performance across its portfolio, especially the OnePlus Nord, which became the highest-selling Android device in Finland this quarter and helped OnePlus become the leader of the $250-$400 price segment too.

Samsung held on to the second spot due to its strong mid-tier performance where it led the market in the $250-$400 price bands.

OnePlus continued its growth story in Denmark and ended Q4 2020 at its highest ever market share in the country. The OnePlus Nord also emerged as the most popular 5G Android device IN THE $250-$400 price band.

OnePlus targets upper mid-tier for record quarterly smartphone shipments in Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands

OnePlusgrew strongly in Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands, with shipments more than doubling annually in Q3 2020. According to Counterpoint Research’s latest analysis of the smartphone markets in Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands, OnePlus recorded its highest ever shipments in a quarter (Q3 2020), with the upper mid-tier ($250-399) being a particular area of success, particularly for theOnePlus Nord.

Market Analysis

Finland

OnePlus was the fastest growing smartphone brand in Finland in Q3 2020, registering 209% sequential growth. It was also one of only two major brands (the other being Xiaomi) to record year-on-year growth in a declining market, with Apple, Samsung and Huawei all recording double-digit drops.

This growth led to OnePlus overtaking Huawei as the market’s third largest brand. OnePlus gained 10 percentage points over the quarter to reach 17% market share; well ahead of Huawei (with 12% share) but still behind both Samsung (32%) and Apple (30%).

However, in two key areas, OnePlus established itself as a market leader due to the success of the OnePlus Nord:

  • OnePlus was the number one5Gsmartphone brand in Finland in Q3 2020 with 53% market share, swapping places with Samsung. The OnePlus Nord was the most popular 5G smartphone in Q3 2020, accounting for a quarter of all 5G smartphone shipments. TheOnePlus 8 familyalso helped; three of the top five 5G devices in Q3 2020 were from OnePlus.
  • In the upper mid-tier ($250-399), OnePlus overtook both Samsung and Apple to become the top brand in Q3 2020 with 33% share (up from 8% last quarter). The OnePlus Nord accounted for 30% of shipments in this segment, almost exactly the same as theApple iPhone SE 2020.

Denmark

OnePlus was also one of the fastest growing smartphone brands in Denmark, with shipments more than doubling over the last quarter. OnePlus has become one of the key Android brands in Denmark and, as in Finland, the OnePlus Nord led this growth in a few key areas:

  • In Q3 2020, OnePlus gained almost 20 percentage points in the upper mid-tier ($250-$399) to become the number two Android brand with 25% share. While OnePlus was still some way behind Samsung (38%), the OnePlus Nord was the most popular upper mid-range smartphone, accounting for 21% of Android smartphone shipments in this segment in Q3 2020.
  • OnePlus was also the second largest 5G smartphone brand, a segment which was still exclusively Android in Q3 2020. The OnePlus Nord was the third most popular 5G device in Q3 2020, closely followed by the OnePlus 8 Pro 5G.

Meanwhile, the One Plus 8 family also helped OnePlus make up ground in the premium (>$400) segments: here, OnePlus is the second largest Android brand with 19% share (behind Samsung with 53%), driven by the OnePlus 8 Pro 5G which is the third in terms of Android smartphone shipments in this segment.

Netherlands

Growth is the main story in the Netherlands as well, where OnePlus bucked the trend by growing strongly in a declining market. OnePlus grew by 412% annually in Q3 2020, compared to the total market which decreased by 8% in the same period.

The Dutch market is dominated by Samsung with 52% share, while Oppo has broken through as the third largest smartphone brand behind Apple. Even here though, OnePlus has done well over the last few quarters in some important areas:

  • In the upper mid-tier ($250-399), OnePlus doubled its market share to become the third largest smartphone brand. The OnePlus Nord was the third most popular smartphone in this segment accounting for 11% of shipments.
  • The OnePlus Nord also helped OnePlus become the top upper mid-tier 5G brand, with 37% of shipments in Q3 2020. Overall, OnePlus is the third largest 5G smartphone brand with 14% share. While this is a decline on last quarter, OnePlus’ total 5G smartphone shipments grew by 22% sequentially, highlighting the competitive nature of the 5G market in the Netherlands.

OnePlus reinforced its position as a premium smartphone brand in Q3 2020 with the 3rdhighest ASP ($480), behind Apple and in a similar area to Samsung. OnePlus’s 5G proposition however is more mid-range, with an attractive and relatively accessible ASP of $539, well below Samsung ($804), Huawei ($823) and Oppo ($590).
