Counterpoint Research – 5G SA Core Deployments Decelerate in H1 2023

  • In some markets, operators await evidence of successful use cases before switching to 5G SA.
  • In H1 2023, the Asia-Pacific region continued to lead in terms of 5G SA Core deployments.
  • Ericsson led the overall market followed by Nokia, Huawei, ZTE, Samsung, and Mavenir.

Counterpoint Research’s recently publishedJuly updateof the5G SA Core Trackeris a culmination of an extensive study of the5GSA market. It provides details of all operators with 5G SA cores in commercial operation at the end of H1 2023, including market share by region, vendor, and the popular frequency bands for deployments. Apart from that, it touches upon the potential monetization opportunities for telecom operators across different domains and uses cases.

Last year, there was steady growth in the commercial deployment of5GStandalone (SA), with more than 20 operators moving to 5G standalone core. However, the pace slowed down in H1 2023 with the number of operators launching commercial 5G SA ranging in single digits. The primary reason for the slowdown in commercialdeploymentof 5G SA was the restraint arising from global macroeconomic factors and the lack of a clear picture of 5G monetization for operators. Although the pace of commercial deployment has slowed down in 2023,operatorsare working on monetization avenues, and are working on SA-specific use cases, including on-demand network slicing and FWA.

Most of the 5G SA commercial deployments have been in developed economies, and Counterpoint Research expects the next bulk ofnetworkrollouts will take place in emerging markets. This will drive the continuing transition from 5G NSA to 5G SA.

Exhibit 1: 5G SA Deployments by Region, H1 20235 g SA商业部署的地区

As shown in Exhibit 1, the Asia-Pacific region led the segment, followed by Europe and North America, with the other regions – Middle East and Africa, and Latin America – lagging.

Key Points

Key points discussed in the report include:

  • Operators– 47 operators have deployed 5G SA commercially with many more in the testing and trial phase. Globally, most of the deployments are in developed economies with those in emerging economies lagging. Although the pace of deployment is steady in developedmarkets, it is progressing slowly in emerging markets, and in some markets, operators are biding their time and looking for evidence of successful use cases before switching from 5G NSA to SA. The ongoing economic headwinds also delayed the commercial deployment of SA, which was seen in H1 2023.
  • Vendors– Ericsson and Nokia lead the5GSA Core market globally and are benefiting from the geopolitical sanctions on Chinese vendors Huawei and ZTE in some markets. South Korea’s Samsung and Japan’s NEC are mainly focused on their respective domestic markets but are expanding their reach to Tier-2 operators and emergingmarkets, while emerging vendors Parallel Wireless and Mavenir are working with leading operators in Europe, and Middle East and Africa.
  • Spectrum– Most operators are deploying 5G in mid-band frequencies, n78, as it provides faster speeds and good coverage. Some operators have also launched commercialservicesin the sub-GHz n28 and mmWave wave n258 bands. FWA seems to be the most popular use case at present but there is a lot of interest in edge services and network slicing as well.
  • Use Cases– Operators are looking for avenues to monetize the5Gservices, as they are struggling to make the RoI from their investments in 5G. Although FWA is a promised application for 5G SA monetization, there are many other use cases that operators can look into to increase their RoI, includingnetworkslicing, live broadcasting, XR applications, and private networks. Although eMBB is the most widely used 5G use case currently, MNOs need to move to 5G SA to leverage URLLC and mMTC use cases.

China Smartwatch Shipments Rise 5% YoY in Q2 2023

  • China’s smartwatch shipments rose 5% YoY in Q2 2023 to mark the market’s gradual recovery.
  • Huawei remained the best-selling brand with a 39% market share.
  • imoo (BBK) surpassed Apple to rank second in market share.
  • The$500 price band’s share increased significantly, while the ≤$50 price band’s share decreased significantly.

Beijing, New Delhi, Seoul, Hong Kong, London, Buenos Aires, San Diego – August 30, 2023

Marking a gradual recovery in Q2 2023, China’s smartwatch shipments increased 5% YoY, according to Counterpoint Research’s latestGlobal Smartwatch Model Tracker.

Senior Analyst Shenghao Baisaid, “The YoY rise in Q2 came on a low base of the same period last year. At the same time, the holiday travel in Q2 and the 618 e-commerce festival also boosted consumer demand for smartwatches. The market has recovered slightly better than we had predicted.”

Market summary

Huaweirecorded a 58% YoY growth, maintaining its good reputation among consumers. The newly launched Huawei Watch 4 and Huawei Watch 4 Pro series models were popular with consumers, while old models such as the Huawei Watch GT 3 series still sold well. Another newly launched model, the Huawei Watch Ultimate, contributed to the brand’s performance in the ultra-premium segment.

imoo(BBK) benefited from the demand in the first full back-to-school quarter after the pandemic lockdown was lifted in China. Its multiple offline retail stores also contributed to the brand’s growth.

Apple在2023年二季度同比减少15%。尽管the Apple Watch Series 8 was the best-selling model family in China during the quarter, its shipments decreased 25% compared to that of its predecessor Apple Watch Series 7 in Q2 2022. With new product launches expected in Q3 2023, Apple is likely to increase its market share in the quarter.

Xiaomirecorded a decrease of 15% YoY but an increase of 7% QoQ. The brand still took the biggest share in the ≤$50 segment. Waning consumer interest in entry-level products contributed to the decline in Xiaomi’s market share.

OPPOachieved a 28% YoY increase in Q2 2023. Promotions during the 618 e-commerce festival helped the OPPO Watch 3 and OPPO Watch 3 Pro’s sales.

China Smartwatch Price Band Q2 2023

Source: Counterpoint’s Global Smartwatch Model Tracker

Note: The price refers to the wholesale price

In terms of wholesale price bands, the ≤$50 band’s share significantly dropped compared to the same period last year. This price band’s share has been recording YoY drops in the past several quarters. On the other hand, the ≥$500 segment’s share rose significantly to 11% from almost negligible in Q2 2022.

Research Analyst Alicia Gongsaid, “The entry-level products with simple features are not as popular with consumers as they once were. A growing number of consumers are gravitating toward smarter devices with more health monitoring, sports tracking and guidance functions. Since the Apple Watch Ultra’s release last year, the share of premium segments has been growing. The promotions during the 618 e-commerce festival also contributed to these segments’ growth.”

Global Smartwatch Shipments See YoY Growth After Two Quarters

  • In Q2 2023, global smartwatch shipments increased 11% YoY after declining for two successive quarters.
  • For the first time in two years, Huawei took the second spot, fueled by a 58% YoY surge in domestic shipments.
  • India’s market recorded a remarkable 70% YoY growth, whereas North America saw a 9% decline.

Seoul, New Delhi, Hong Kong, Beijing, London, Buenos Aires, San Diego – August 29, 2023

Global smartwatch shipments increased 11% YoY in Q2 2023 after declining in both Q4 2022 and Q1 2023, according to Counterpoint Research’s recently publishedGlobal Smartwatch Model Tracker. India’s shipments soared by 70% YoY, serving as the primary driver for the global market’s rebound. China’s market also recorded a modest increase. Besides, a shift in the competitive landscape was evident as Huawei ascended to the second position in terms of global market share.

Research Analyst Woojin Sonsaid, “Huawei recorded impressive growth in Q2 2023, securing the second position in quarterly shipments for the first time in two years. The leading Chinese brand’s growth stagnated for some time due to technological sanctions and a slowdown in its domestic market. Although the Chinese market’s recovery remained lukewarm, Huawei aggressively pushed new flagship products such as the Watch 4 series into the market in Q2, achieving its highest quarterly shipments after 2020. Huawei seems to be determined to bounce back in the market. It remains to be seen whether this momentum can be effectively expanded to other sectors, such as smartphones.”

Why is the smartphone market declining in Q1 2022?

The global smartphone market growth saw a decline of 7% YoY, shipping 328 million units in Q1 2022 caused by the ongoing component shortages, as well as COVID resurgence at the beginning of the quarter and the Russia-Ukraine war towards the end. The global smartphone market also, as expected, had a seasonal decline of 12% QoQ. The component supply crunch was felt more severely by major Chinese OEMs such as Xiaomi, OPPO* and vivo as compared with Samsung, which seems to have overcome component shortages that affected its supply last year, as evidenced by higher-than-expected growth in its shipments despite a late flagship launch.

Consequently, Samsung regained the top spot from Apple which had emerged as the biggest smartphone vendor globally in Q4 2021 thanks to its latest iPhone 13 series.

Which country has the highest market share of smartphones globally?

With its share at around 22.5% of the global smartphone shipments in Q1 2022,China仍然是世界上最大的智能手机市场。这s is down from around 25.6% in Q1 2021 as China’s economy grew slower than expected due to COVID-related lockdowns and shipment volumes declined by over 19% YoY. While China’s share of global smartphone market growth (shipments) remains flat QoQ thanks to a small peak in demand during Chinese New Year and as the global smartphone market declined QoQ due to seasonality, in terms of absolute shipments, China saw a quarterly decline of over 12%.

HONOR has emerged as the biggest smartphone player in China, chipping into vivo and OPPO*’s shares and stepping into the position previously held by Huawei from which it recently separated. Although vivo did not succeed in regaining the top position due to HONOR’s rise at a time when it is itself facing component shortages, it did recover somewhat thanks to its newly launched mid-end S12 series that is popular with younger customers and the affordable the Y series which showed strong performance in the quarter.

China Best Selling

China smartphone market share Q2 2023 highlights:

  • Smartphone shipments in China fell 4% YoY in Q2 2023 though OEMs provided big promotions during the 618 festival. This was due to weak demands resulting from economic headwinds.
  • Apple saw the biggest YoY growth in Q2 as the OEM offered generous price-cuts for the iPhone 14 series during the 618 period. Besides, it still has no competitors in the high-end market which has proven to be more resilient during market headwinds.
  • OPPO’s share grew slightly (YoY) as OnePlus showed strong growth piggybacking of the channel support from OPPO. OnePlus compensated for OPPO’s limited online presence by using its online-centric business model to effectively tap into the segment.
  • vivo and Xiaomi saw YoY declines as weak economy dampened consumer spending.
  • HONOR’s share dropped significantly (YoY) partially because Huawei’s growth posted a challenge for HONOR.
  • We anticipate an improvement in smartphone shipments during H2 compared to H1, a strong rebound does not seem to be on the horizon as challenges that affected the performance in H1 are likely to persist.

Note:
HONOR separated from Huawei in Q4 2020 and its market share does not include Huawei brand family volumes starting Q1 2021.
* OPPO includes OnePlus since Q3 2021.

Q1 2023 Highlights

Published Date: May 16, 2023

  • China’s smartphone shipments declined 8% YoY in Q1 2023, reaching their lowest level since Q1 2020. However, this was an improvement from the double-digit YoY declines seen in previous quarters as well as a sign of bottoming out.
  • Apple’s market share in China increased to 20% in Q1 2023 from 18% in Q1 2022. This was driven by its continued expansion in China’s premium segment with more aggressive promotion and marketing campaigns for the iPhone 14 series.
  • In contrast, all the major Android OEMs saw YoY declines as demand in the mass market remained weak. OEMs remained cautious in ramping up production to manage demand carefully and avoid any unhealthy inventory build-up in the market.
  • Despite this caution, we expect the market to further recover in H2 2023, as inventory pressure continues to ease and consumer sentiments improve.

Q1 2019 Highlights

  • As the largest smartphone market in the world, the start of 2019 continues the sluggishness from H2 2018.
  • The sustained decline can be attributed to the overall economic downturn in China which has resulted in consumers’ prolonged replacement cycles for smartphones.
  • Consumer demand continues to remain divided. While some are delaying smartphone upgrades others are buying other electronic products to satisfy their desire for freshness.
  • In addition, other factors affecting sales in Q1 2019 includes the lack of new product launches.

  • Apple’s sales increased 7% YoY as its position in the premium segment remained unchallenged.

Beijing, New Delhi,Hong Kong, London,San Diego, Buenos Aires, Seoul – July 28, 2023

China’s smartphonesales fell 4% YoY in Q2 2023, reaching the lowest Q2 sales figure since 2014, according to Counterpoint’sMarket Pulse Service.Themacro headwinds, both internal and external, took a toll on Chinese consumer sentiment.

In April and May, smartphone sales remained weak, while the 618 e-commerce festival provided a boost in June, resulting in a 25% MoM growth. However, despite the sequential increase in June, the relatively weak performance observed during the618 sales period(June 1 to June 18), with an 8% YoY decline according to Counterpoint’s618 Sales Period Thematic Report, ultimately led to a 6% YoY decline for the full month of June.

AmongOEMs, Apple, Huawei and realme managed to achieve positive YoY growth.Applemaintained excellent sales performance with 7% YoY growth as its position in the premium segment remained unchallenged. The premium segment has proven to be more resilient during economic headwinds. Even within Apple, the sales share of the more premium Pro models grew from around one-third in Q2 2022 to around half in Q2 2023.

Sales of OEMs excluding Apple dropped 5.5% YoY, with all major Android OEMs except Huawei and realme seeing YoY declines. In terms of market share, vivoreclaimed its leadership position with a 17.7% share driven by a strong performance of the Y35 series, Y8 series and the newly launched S17 series.OPPO(including OnePlus) andApplewere in a tie in Q2, each capturing a 17.2% share.

Notably,OnePlusmanaged to maintain its strong growth momentum from Q1 2023 and achieved YoY growth of 254% in Q2 on the back of channel support from OPPO. On the other hand, OnePlus played an important role in compensating for OPPO’s limited online presence by using its online-centric business model to effectively tap into the segment.

Huawei’s smartphone sales grew 58% YoY in Q2 2023 as the brand managed to resume normal product launches this year. Leveraging its well-established brand image and strong offline footprint, especially in top-tier cities, Huawei witnessed a surge in sales after resolving its product shortages.

HONORandXiaomisaw their market shares drop in Q2 2023 on escalating competition. But HONOR has been catching up in offline presence in China.

With a disappointing performance in H1 2023, we have revised downwards our 2023 forecast for China’s smartphone market – from flat growth to a low single-digit YoY decrease. While we anticipate an improvement in smartphone sales during H2 when compared to H1, a strong rebound does not seem to be on the horizon as challenges that affected the performance in H1 are likely to persist.

China Smartphone Sales Declined 8% YoY During 618 Period in 2023

  • Weak customer demand amid economic headwinds hit smartphone sales during the 618 period this year (June 1-June 18).
  • vivo took the biggest market share during the sales period while Huawei experienced significant growth.
  • Online-centric Xiaomi increased most sequentially this year. It offered bigger discounts on select high-memory products.
  • Our forecast for China’s smartphone market has been revised downwards to reflect the latest developments.

China’s smartphone salesfell 8% YoY during the 618 sales period in 2023 (June 1-June 18), indicating weak customer demand for smartphones amid economic headwinds, according to Counterpoint’s618 Sales Period Thematic Report. In terms of the competitive landscape for smartphone brands, vivo secured the largest share in the 618 sales period this year, capturing 18.2% of the market. vivo was followed by Apple at 17.9% and HONOR at 15.4%.

Applecontinued to excel in thepremiumsegment, exhibiting an 8% YoY increase without facing any significant competition. To boost iPhone sales during the 618 period, e-commerce websites offered discounts of around 20%.

Huawei saw a substantial 52% YoY growth in sales. The company declared that it had resumed normal product launches this year, unveiling smartphones ranging from the Mate X3 to Enjoy 60 series in H1 2023, covering almost all price segments. The accelerated pace of product launches is expected to contribute to Huawei’s sustained rapid YoY growth in H2 2023.

The price cuts implemented by OEMs proved effective in helping themarket恢复显著低智能手机销售s witnessed in May and April. During the June 1-June 18 period, the total market sales increased by around 30% compared to the previous 18 days.

Online-centric Xiaomi increased most this year in sequential terms. It offered bigger discounts on select high-memory products. Xiaomi also expanded its product portfolio by introducing the K60 16GB+1TB variant at a competitive price of RMB 2,899 (~$400).

The weak sales during the 618 period also fell short ofearlier expectations, despite efforts by most Android OEMs to entice consumers with price cuts. Due to the uncertain economic outlook, consumers were more cautious in their spending, including on durable goods like smartphones.

As a result, we have revised downwards our 2023 forecast for the China smartphone market, from flat growth to a low single-digit YoY decrease.
